The Books of Antonio Frasconi

Name an Uruguayan-American visual artist best known for his woodcuts that you like more than Antonio Frasconi. Anyone? Did that artist also make books worthy of a show at the Grolier Club? Perhaps. But Frasconi was first. This exhibition catalogue from the 1996 exhibition is an exception survey of Frasconi’s books—both fancy and for the trade. (No book covers, though. [Here’s just one of a zillion we offer.]) Over the years we’ve only seen a few of his books in real life, but they’re always remarkable examples of humane bookmaking.
