Context, Vol. 1, No. 1 (Daphne Geismar)
Produced in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts at Yale University with a major in graphic design, this first (and only) issue of Context was written, designed, and produced by acclaimed book designer Daphne Geismar. Per the inside cover, “Context confronts topics of social injustice through artistic representation and literary expression. [. . .] Context was inspired by Direction, a magazine published from 1937 to 1945 by Marguerite Tjader Harris. Her belief in the need to speak out against fascism led to this magazine.” With a detailed history of Direction (with a showing of every cover), an interview with Marion and Paul Rand, and a profile of Tjader Harris. But, more importantly, it is an interesting and useful piece of design scholarship. We can’t wait for the next issue. Rare. WoldCat shows copies at Yale and University of London Senate House Library. Let’s add your library to that list.
