[Original Walter Tiemann lettering for the quarterly journal of the Goethe Society]
It’s 1936(ish). Germany’s Goethe Society is planning a quarterly journal devoted to the work of . . . Goethe. They get Walter Tiemann to do the lettering on the cover. He throws in two rules and a six-sided star just for kicks. How do we know? Well, here’s the original lettering he made for the title, two rules, and six-sided star. This is all mounted on a black card. On the other side of that card are two proofs marked up with comments. Then we have a copy of the very first issue of that quarterly journal, so you get the before, intermediary, and final result. Neat, eh? And you totally love Goethe, are we right? The way he wrote about . . . um, stuff . . . is still moving. A good original by the designer of these types.
- Size: Side 1: 7.5 × 10 inches; Side 2: two pieces about 6.875 × 4.5 inches; all are mounted on a black sheet of 8.25 × 11.75 inches
- Pages: 3 sheets mounted on one sheet
- Note: Also comes with Goethe: Vierteljahresschrift der Goethe-Gesellschaft, Vol. 1, No. 1 (1936)
- Condition: Aged and worn, but the actual items are fine. There some pencil notations—including the name “Tiemann” but we are not prepared to say that it’s the signature of Tiemann. Google will point you to a few pics. Search his name with “signature” or “Unterschrift.” The issue of the Journal is good with minor soiling and spotting and aging.
