Artograph, No. 6 (Paul Rand)
This issue of Artograph, a short-lived publication by the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Baruch College, is devoted entirely to Paul Rand. Published in 1988, it captures Rand in conversation near the end of his career—sharp, candid, and characteristically opinionated. It’s got a showing of the usual suspects—but what is especially nice is that he rattled off a handful of inspirations (in alphabetical order) and then editor Virginia Smith gathered info about those guys and prepared a showing of their work, too. That’s the best way to do things: Listen to people and pick up on the clues they leave behind. This one does just that. A quiet gem that belonged to Steve Heller right up until the moment that you bought it.
