Imagine our surprise: We’re looking into the work of the Swiss designer Emil Ruder and we come across a book he designed with illustrations by Marian Parry, an artist, illustrator, poet, and Cantabrigian who lived down the street from us (and died just a couple of weeks ago at the age of 97). This delightful fairy tale includes Marian’s illustrations and Ruder’s Baseline typography. The later American edition (in English) might be better if you can’t read the German here, but the design is unremarkable and clumsy. In all honesty the design here is not terribly remarkable, but it does its job and not one thing more—which is exactly what it should do.
