UPS delivered it. We unpacked it. We looked at it. We left it out on the counter. We got back to work. Then someone came in. They went straight to it. They ask why the book was so cold. We told them it just came in from the cold. They said, “I’ve been looking for this. How did you get this?” We said, “It’s our job to get stuff.” And then it was gone. (They paid for it, of course.) We hope this Bart van der Leck bookplate for Madeleine de Vlam stays around a little longer. A week or so would be nice. Anyway, this bonkers beauty was designed in 1943 for Madeleine de Vlam, a student of Henk Bremmer, the Dutch painter and art critic. Unable to exhibit his work during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, Van der Leck turned to graphic design—an artist’s last resort. A spectacular specimen that reminds us that Madameselle Madeleine was always shining (because that’s what Semper fulgens means).
