Mantinia
Visitors to Falmouth, Massachusetts, might notice the street signs are a little more authoritative than most. This could be the result of their being set in Carter & Cone’s Mantinia, a titling face designed to accompany Matthew Carter’s Galliard. This specimen, issued in 1993, is a handsome showing of a handsome face—whether on street signs or no. Signed by Matthew, this is a neat historic document, not just because it chronicles an important face (as verified by MoMA) but because it’s a reminder that, once, even digital fonts were physical things.
