“Mörder aller Länder, vereinigt Euch!” (“Murderers of all countries, unite!”)
Here’s an anti-fascist poster stamp issued between the wars by the Austrian Social Democrats and/or their paramilitary wing, the Republikanischer Schutzbund. The design features a handsome slab serif, bloodied knives, clenched fists, and one cuff bearing the Three Arrows symbol—an emblem of resistance against Nazism, fascism, and monarchy. A bitter parody of the Marxist slogan “Workers of the world, unite,” the stamp condemns rising political violence in prewar Europe—from both the far right and militant factions on the left. A powerful design (from the collection of Steven Heller) and a good conversation-starter at Thanksgiving.
