Noel Martin, Designer

There once was a time when the Addison Gallery up the road in Andover, Massachusetts, had major exhibitions about graphic designers. Perhaps our father was dragged to this one as he lived down the street and would’ve been five at the time. Anyway, it’s hard to imagine such a show at that gallery now—even if they do have great shows. And to think they brought in Noel Martin all the way from Cincinnati! Where the heck is that? Well, it’s where Martin was doing good and innovative work for cultural institutions and corporate clients. When the center of the design world in the U.S. was New York, Martin kept his head down and did noteworthy work without worry about getting noticed—which is the best way to get noticed.
