Suggested by hybrid alphabets of capitals, uncials, and Greek letterforms from sixth-century Constantinople (before it was Istanbul), Matthew Carter’s Sophia was first shown in Design Quarterly No. 158. If we had our act together, we’d be offering that issue of the journal with this. But this specimen published in 1993 will have to do on its own for now. Take comfort in knowing that it is signed by Matthew. (And copies of that issue of DQ are available for $10, so knock yourself out.)
