Our fifty-first Standing-Room Only Lecture will have Suzie Shin coming from Paris on the Prairie to talk about love. Let her tell you about someone she loves. She never met him, but she handled mail with his handwriting on it. His friends and family called him “Sandro.” They never spoke, but she walked the same sidewalks as him in Columbus, Indiana. She’s seen his architectural sketches for projects that never came to fruition, but also pieces that are lovingly kept in private archives—stained, faded, paper edges disintegrated. People wrote that he was humble, detail-obsessed, and a passionate collector. Suzie could never remember details of his education or accolades, but she’ll never forget his colors. Come not just to learn about the architect and interior designer, Alexander Girard, but to fall in love with the design optimism that he sought to share with the world.
Our speaker, Suzie Shin, is a designer, educator, and artist based in Chicago. She teaches typography at DePaul University in Chicago and oversees design at Haan Coffee. In 2025 she curated Alexander Girard, Reverberations—Forever with Rick Valicenti at 411 Gallery in Columbus, Indiana.
