Our fiftieth Standing-Room-Only Lecture will have Ben Barry coming from the land of “move fast and break things” to talk about artificial intelligence—which is fitting, since ChatGPT helped write this description. To prepare the talk, Ben shared tens of thousands of messages from years of private correspondence with friends and asked ChatGPT to make sense of his optimism, anxiety, arguments, and changing expectations. Drawing on decades of films, television, books, and predictions about thinking machines, he’ll trace AI’s journey from distant philosophical possibility to daily collaborator, consider how it is changing the work of graphic designers, and explain why he remains optimistic about what comes next.
Our speaker, Ben Barry, is a visual artist and designer and the founder of the design studio Nonlinear. He was one of the first communication designers at Facebook, where he cofounded the Facebook Analog Research Laboratory, an internal print studio and art program, and previously worked at the Austin design firm and screen-printing shop The Decoder Ring. He was formerly Design Director at OpenAI (whose ChatGPT wrote this bio) and is currently Design Director at Generalist.
