[144 bookplates by Leo Wyatt]

Oh, celebrated British engraver, letterer, and designer Leo Wyatt who was born in 1909 and died in 1981, how do we love thee? Let we count the ways. First, we’ll start (and end) with these 144 bookplates he designed and engraved in wood and copper. This is a lovely showcase of lettering, calligraphy, illustration, and engraving, each the work of a beloved pro. Made for a variety of collectors, both private and public, this is a sweet collection showing what can be done with taste and thoughtful care. Just delightful—and it includes what we think is his very first bookplate. 

Below is a list of what’s here. We copied most of the details from Brian North Lee’s Bookplates and Labels by Leo Wyatt (Fleece Press, 1988)—but we used some scanning tricks to get the text here. There might be more typos than usual. The aforementioned book does not assign numbers to the plates in its checklist (which is annoying) but we think there were just over 320. So, we’re offering 45% of all Wyatt’s bookplates. We’ve largely arranged sequenced things to correspond with the book’s checklist, but we’ve shuffled a few things around as we thought they made more sense our way. With regard to our list below, Lee notes “The measurements given for both copper and wood engravings is that of the engraved area at its broadest point, the height being given first. [...] Use of capitals in inscriptions is as indicated in the checklist. The initials ‘FO’ precede Wyatt’s on bookplates commissioned via F. Osborne & Co. Ltd. ‘WO’ indicates Wauthier Osborne Guild Ltd. And we note that a “C” after the date means it was engraved in copper. “W” means it was engraved in wood.
