Herstellung einer Nickelmater
Not a whole lot seems to be known about this lehrtafel (wall chart) from the Klingspor foundry. It’s No. 4 in a series of six that illustrate the processes involved in making metal type. (By the way, it’s not lead type. Why do people say lead type? If type was just lead it would be smashed after one impression. Lead is soft. Printer’s type is an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony. Don’t get us started.) Many years ago we got this poster dedicated to electroforming nickel matrices and were told complete sets were rare. That was recently confirmed by this exchange of tweets. Apparently not even the Klingspor Museum has a complete set. Complete or no, this one piece is lovely and curious and neat on its own.
- Size: 14 × 24 inches
- Medium: Letterpress
- Condition: Browned with age and it’s got pin holes in the corners. Note that in the first pic above there seems to be a smear across the middle. That’s just in the image, the result of our lazy scanning and impatient photoshopping.
- Publisher: Klingspor, n.d.
