Letterteekenen
The purpose of this book is to teach the draughtsman to draw letters. How difficult that is, will become apparent during the study. Of course, this need not be a reason not to start. On the contrary. Are the difficulties not there, to be overcome? And they will be overcome, if only one works diligently with the help of this book. It’ll help if you can read Dutch. (Because the book is in Dutch.) But before starting to learn to draw letters by hand, this book cannot insist enough on first drawing a large number of construction letters. And then not one or two letters of an alphabet. No, the entire alphabet. All twenty-six letters in upper and lowercase. What, after all, determines to a large extent the beautiful letter: the character. And the character of a letter is learned by knowing those letters through and through and for that the indicated way is: constructing the letter. Therefore this book begins by drawing a number of constructed letters and discussing construction methods, thereby giving the draftsmen every opportunity to design various typefaces on the basis of these constructions. Only then does the drawing of letters take place by hand, that is, without construction. So sayeth the introduction as translated by Google. We sayeth that this book has lessons for all even if we can’t read them.
