Schreibschrift, Zierschrift und angewandte Schrift

This is the one that started it all—except in German! While certainly writing & illuminating & lettering existed before Edward Johnston published Writing & Illuminating & Lettering in 1908, the principles and techniques had never before been laid out with such efficient clarity. From the pen to the letter to the word to the page—and even carving in stone—this book covers it all. But what was one to do in Germany if they could not read English? This was the book for them as Johnston’s student and colleague Anna Simons translated the book and made it available to the German masses, influencing countless designers who influenced countless designers who still continue to influence countless designers. Without the work of Anna Simons, German graphic design in the twentieth century would have been wildly different. This is all explained in Inge Druckrey’s book—which is fitting, because this is Inge’s copy of Schreibschrift, Zierschrift und angewandte Schrift.
