Typothetae

Thirty-seven misspellings of the Hampshire Typothetæ’s name, along with definitions of “typothetae”—the first “signifying type placers.” Designed by Barry Moser in Centaur and Arrighi types. Printed by Harold McGrath in black, red, blue and about twelve other colors for the bullets—each requiring a separate press run. A nice thing.

Oh. Wait. You don’t know what the Hampshire Typothetæ was. In 1978, Moser, McGrath, Jeffrey P. Dwyer (bookseller), John Lancaster & Ruth Mortimer (curator-librarians), and John Locke (dunno) established the Hampshire Typothetae in Northampton, Massachusetts, later in West Hatfield, Massachusetts, as a commercial letterpress shop. The business was established using printing equipment that Leonard Baskin had used at his Gehenna Press. The Typothetae operated until 1986.
