[W.A. Dwiggins letterhead, 1930s]
Earlier in the week we were in New Haven, stocking up for next week’s Typographics book fair. We were at Howard Gralla’s house, going through his library and files . . . again. We’d kinda felt like we’d already grabbed the best stuff on previous trips, but we were just going back for B+ books to fill out the tables. Anyway, we’re digging through files we’d previously gone through and . . . bingo: a W.A. Dwiggins letterhead presents itself.* A total beauty.
*We also found, like, 200 midcentury European type specimens that we’d managed to miss on previous trips. And an envelope from the Society of Calligraphers. Some correspondence from Dorothy Abbe. Early letterheads from David R. Godine. Some neat Inge Druckrey + Edward Tufte items. And lots more. Every time we give up on that collection it surprises us. And after five trips, it still looks like we’ve hardly made a dent. We still haven’t made a careful selection from the flat files. But we digress.
