WAD to RR: A letter about designing type
While today there are schools and enormous online communities where people discuss type design and how to design type and they offer suggestions and critiques, once there was nothing. If one wanted to design a typeface, one would have to hunt for that rare person who designed a typeface and see if they’d reveal anything. Young Rudolph Ruzicka* got lucky when he asked W.A. Dwiggins for thoughts and he got this letter back. Does it have all the answers? No. But it laid a foundation. A fascinating document, beautifully produced.
*He was 54.
