A Newe Booke of Copies 1574
This facsimile of a unique Elizabethan writing book in the Bodleian Library in Oxford is accompanied by an intro and notes by Berthold Wolpe—which makes him even more impressive. But what’s really remarkable are these beautiful letterforms. There’s definitely an italic to steal from this book and turn into a new typeface. Get to work.
- Editor: Berthold Wolpe
- Size: 8.5 × 9.5 inches
- Pages: 100
- Binding: Hardcover
- Condition: Minor water stain at front spine. More serious mark on the back cover. Looks like someone wrote an italic J on paper that bled. Stamped on rear leaf as removed from Carnegie Mellon and with another Hunt Library stamp beneath. But both are discreet and there is no other indication that this was ever in a library (or even looked at). Small split in the fabric on the spine. But we’ve put this in a new mylar jacket and it looks amazing.
