[an advertisement for Gebrüder Gotthelft]
When one works on books about slabs, stencils, shadows, and scripts, one needs a lot of examples around. Like, when Louise Fili was working on Scripts, she picked up this ad for Gebrüder Gotthelft, a Royal Court book printer based in Cassel (modern-day Kassel), Germany. It announces their annual “Calendar Novelties” (Kalender-Neuheiten) released every September. A sophisticated example of early 20th-century German Jugendstil commercial printing, it’s from 1912 or 1911. How do we know this? We just spotted a paper perforation at the top. See that light green strip? It was most likely attached to this. At some point they must have come undone. Get them both separately before we put them together and raise the price. Or, enjoy individually and know that this and the other came from the collection of Louise Fili.
