Benvenuto Cellini & Bembo
We are great admirers of the work of S.L. Hartz. And we’ve always been told he was a good guy. And here’s a rare showing of what became his proprietary face, Emergo. The story goes (because we’re copying it from Fonts in Use [although we also just read it in Dutch Types]) is that Stanley Morison at Monotype showed interest in the face, but Hartz withdrew his design in favor of Spectrum, to avoid a clash with Jan van Krimpen (who wasn’t always a good guy). It ended up being used exclusively at Hartz’s own private press. Anyway, this was printed as a 1954 season’s greeting and has a full showing of the face on the back. Seems rare.
