Edward Johnston has been described as the father of modern calligraphy, whose teaching and example had inspired a host of others not only in England but abroad. Did you know he was originally a medical student before throwing away his future on letters? This book, published as the first in a series of monographs on artistic letterers, suggest that it was all worth. His parents probably didn’t think so, of course, but . . . well, don’t get us started on parents. Anyway, a good introduction produced when the work and Johnston’s impact was still fresh.
