K 2: Zeitung der Schüler der Allgemeinen Gewerbeschule Basel
OK. Ready? Here’s the second of three issues of K: Zeitung der Schüler der Allgemeinen Gewerbeschule Basel (Student Magazine of the Vocational Trade School of Basel). Published from 1963 to 1964, in three thematic issues, by the students of what later became the Basel School of Design in Switzerland. The work in K originated almost exclusively from the graphic design course taught by Armin Hofmann—and you’ll recognize more than a few pieces from his Graphic Design Manual. Especially exciting, though, was seeing two of those old black-and-white gems in color as this has two color lithographs by Manfred Maier and Hans U. Allemann. (Actually, the Allemann is printed in two blacks, but it’s much better here than it is in Hofmann’s book.) Anyway, this is super-rare and super-awesome.
Note: We stole much of the above [except what was clearly written by us] from Sandra Bischler’s “K and output: Two Student Publications in Light of Mid-Twentieth Century Graphic Design Education” in Volume 37, Issue 1 of Design Issues.
