Kaba-ornament
This here is a Copper Monday gift from Uitgeverij de Buitenkant, the Dutch publisher of books we are glad to offer whenever we can. Koppermaandag (Copper Monday) falls on the first Monday after Epiphany (January 6) and is the day of the printers’ journeymen. In the past, journeymen would visit customers with self-printed prints or calendars to offer them. The “kopper” money received for this was used to celebrate. This gift was a preview of Bram de Does’s Kaba ornament and the monumental publication on the subject that was scheduled to appear. It consists largely of reproductions of sketches of experiments by De Does carried out with a single asymmetrical ornament and its mirror image. One of 500 copies, and hardly seen.
