Spearfish Sequence (Dubberly, Bigelow, and Twombly)

OK. Here’s something we didn’t know: type designer Charles Bigelow was involved in fine printing. Here’s a little book of poetry designed by Bigelow and Hugh Dubberly (AIGA Fellow) with help from Carol Twombly (Trajan and Adobe Caslon) and Miko Yamaguchi (about whom we can find nothing). The poems were written by notable linguist, sociolinguist, anthropologist, and folklorist Dell Hymes, who was accused of sexual harassment in the later years of his tenure at the University of Pennsylvania. Still, an interesting item printed from Syntax Antiqua that shows four young designers (three of whom went on to be big design names) pursuing something for pleasure rather than profit.
