You’ll know Graily Hewitt’s work from his illustrations in Johnston’s Writing & Illuminating & Lettering. (You’ve read Writing & Illuminating & Lettering, right?) However, you might not know his type design. And this particular type design, Treyford, was apparently the first type based on handwriting. Don’t quote us on that, though. Buy the book, read it, tell us what you learn, and then we can quote you. A lovely piece of printing and a fine showing of this unique face printed directly from the metal types. (Also in a beautiful binding.)

  • Condition: The binding is very fine. The paste down and first and last leaves are discolored at the turn-ins, the leather apparently not liking the fact that it is covered by paper. But that discoloration vanishes after a subsequent leaf or two. Interior is spotless.
