The Steadfast Tin Soldier of Joh. Enschedé en Zonen, Haarlem

$200.00

This award-winning volume traces the “biographical” myth of the English-bodied Roman No. 6, nicknamed the Schefferletter. Originally believed by the Enschedé family to be a 15th-century relic from Peter Schoeffer, the type was later reattributed to 1520s Cologne. Produced by Bram de Does following a lecture by Ernst Braches, the book chronicles the acrimonious scholarly disputes regarding the type’s pedigree—most notably during the German occupation. Hand-set using recycled type from a 1943 edition, the work features masterful three-color printing and earned the prestigious Felice Feliciano prize for typographic excellence.
