Typografische Monatsblätter (10.1973)

So many issues of Typografische Monatsblätter are largely filled with technical stuff in German and French that are completely uninteresting and not the least bit useful. But even in those completely-uninteresting and not-the-least-bit-useful issues there is a section about design and typography. This one has a handsome section dedicated to previous covers designed by Rudolf Hostettler. This issue also features a study titled Symbolic Constructions by Aaron Marcus (then based in Princeton), which explores non-linear typographic systems, conceptual grammars of symbols, and visual communication models designed to surpass the limitations of traditional text. The whole thing is mostly in German and French so you probably won’t be able to read it, but you can look at it for a lifetime—especially the striking cover by Wolfgang Weingart.
