Ziele des Schriftunterrichts
With regard to this book, allow us to copy from Inge Druckrey’s exceptional Modern Pioneers in Typography and Design:
In the impressive 1911 book published by Eugen Diederichs, titled Ziele des Schriftunterrichts: Ein Beitrag zur moernen Schriftbewegung (Goals for the teaching of writing and lettering: A contribution to the modern writing movement), F.H. Ehmcke documented his teaching in the summer program [at the Dusseldorf School of Arts and Crafts]. The publication is richly illustrated and includes, next to basic writing exercises, experiments in ornamental writing and lettering. Mose examples are student work, but Ehmcke also included pieces of his own to demonstrate the possible uses of decorative lettering in practical applications.
Of this uncommon copy of the first edition of this book, we say:
It’s a humbling showcase of what can be done when the limits are pushed by those who know the limits and are familiar with the notion that type and lettering first must aid in communication. This thing is loaded with lettering that could easily be developed into new faces. Too good.
