Doslownie (Literally: Lettering and Typography of Polish Book Covers 1944–2019)
How to design a cover using only letters that will tell the story of the book’s content, convey its mood, intrigue and encourage purchase? It’s not an easy task, but one that graphic designers have undertaken many times. The results of this struggle are presented in this volume. Janusz Górski, head of the Book Workshop at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, selected almost a thousand of the best covers by Polish designers. He also presented a small number of unsuccessful works, explaining the reasons for the failure—although you most likely won’t be able to read those reasons because the book is in Polish. No matter. Teach yourself Polish. Or just look and think for yourself. Either way, this one is a good resource.
