Kunsttechnische Handbücher 4: Schriftornament
Our understanding of the introduction to this text is that our letters developed from pictograms. And pictograms were about nature. And ornament was typically based on nature. So, what if we took our letters and used them as the basis for ornamentation? L.M.K. Capeller has made a pretty convincing case for our letters being used as a building block for patterns and decoration. But what’s even nicer is that he takes the principles he illustrates (spacing, repetition, overlapping, and so on) and applies them to more practical pursuits like logos and monograms. A really stunning and beautiful showing of what’s possible when we turn this into that and that into this.
